![]() Some are single mode, while more expensive ones can sync to multiple line refresh rates. Most arcade games use a 15khz line refresh rate.ĬRTs are indeed still made for arcade use. The weird refresh rates you are looking at refer to the number of horizontal lines the monitor can do per second, rather than the number of times the entire screen is refreshed. They should have set 16:10 as the standard. I'm very sensitive to these things, unfortunately.ġ6:9 is just retarded for a computer screen though. I don't think they make an LCD that'll run at an arbitrary refresh, do they? Also, pixel lag/ghosting/motion blur, or whatever you call it, could be an issue. (Right now I'm just choosing to live with the tearing.) It could also lead to jumpy/jerky scrolling. With an LCD I think you're gonna always have some input lag, more so if you set any of the options to mitigate screen tearing. Do these CRT arcade monitors, if they even still exist, adjust to the exact refresh rate specified by each game? What about resolution? I've noticed from MAME that most of these arcade games have unorthodox refresh rates (why?). Is there a config setting (there or in GameEx) that allows you to force some games verticle and some horizontal?Īlso, does anyone have any experience with light gun games on a MAME cab? Speaking of monitor choices, I imagine the games that are intended for verticle just get scaled down, right? It's been a long time since I've played with MAME. What are the downsides of going the LCD route? (besides the classic aesthetic of a CRT) Are there any games that just don't work or look terrible on it? I simply couldn't be arsed finding a CRT to do the job. I guess there's nothing stopping you from buying an LCD TV these days, but it's going to be 16:9 or thereabouts. LCDs do have the disadvantage of being difficult to find larger than 19" if you're after a 4:3 aspect ratio. I have a fairly small 19" LCD in there, which was the single monitor I had kicking about. I use GameEx for the front-end, and it works well. You'll see in that thread that Aurich has a much nicer-looking cabinet. I show how I built my own cabinet, together with links to a couple of videos of it in action. First thing I'll do is link to my Ars MAME cabinet thread.
